Rugby:
 The first match in South Africa took place between the "Officers of the Army" and the "Gentlemen of the Civil Service" at Green Point in Cape Town in 1862 and ended as a 0-0 draw.
South Africa played its first international in 1891 against a touring side from Britain although it was not until the side toured Britain in 1906 that they became known as the Springboks.

Cricket:
 South African cricket was isolated from the rest of the world for 21 years because of the apartheid policies of the former government. Isolation came at a time when the country could fairly claim to be the top test-playing nation in the world after the Springboks had pummelled the powerful Australians 4-0 with ease.
When the country was readmitted to world cricket in 1991 it was able to face all opponents, and India was the first to welcome the 'new' South Africa into the international game.

Horse racing in South Africa started in 1797 and the first recorded raceclub meeting took place in 1802. The Jockey Club of Southern Africa, the organisation which regulates the sport of thoroughbred horseracing, was founded in 1882.
